Get to know the main utility providers in Peninsula Malaysia.
In each country there are utility providers consisting of government and private. It also depends on the State or District. There are utility operators that cover the whole country and there are also those by area so it is easy to maintain and manage.
In Malaysia, due to its unique geographical position between the Peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak which are separated by the South China Sea, there are no utility operators covering the entire country. We will discuss for the peninsula area first.
Utility Providers in Peninsular Malaysia
In Peninsular Malaysia we can divide it into 3 categories, namely
Primary Utility Providers (Whole Peninsula)
Other Utility Providers (Whole Peninsula)
Utility Providers by State and District
Primary Utility Providers (Whole Peninsula)
Primary utility operators in peninsular Malaysia are involved in energy sources as well as sewerage. Energy sources are meant as electricity as well as gas.
1) Electricity
Electricity is operated by Tenaga Nasional Berhad, known as TNB. It has branches and buildings in each district whole peninsula for management, installation and maintenance works.
Apart from office buildings, TNB also has many other assets such as dams, transmission towers, substation buildings (PMU, PPU, SSU and PE) and many more that we can see everywhere. Without electricity all other utility operators may also not be able to operate and run their services.
Apart from TNB, are there other electricity operators in peninsular Malaysia?
So far none but this issue has been discussed by the government in malaysiakini news excerpt published on 5 Jul 2019, 12:00pm
"The ministry is researching and reviewing proposals to open up the electricity retail sector to enable consumers to choose electricity suppliers other than TNB," the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change said in a parliamentary written reply dated July 3. - More malaysiakini.com news
How does TNB get its energy resources?
There are 2 main resources, namely Hydro Energy and Thermal Energy. In addition, TNB also actively obtains energy from Solar and other sources.
TNB is the largest electricity utility in Malaysia and a leading utility company in Asia with an international presence in United Kingdom, Kuwait, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India and Indonesia. More about TNB
2) Gas
Gas energy resources are operated by Gas Malaysia Berhad as a natural gas distribution for the whole peninsula. Unlike TNB where TNB's coverage area can be said to be almost anywhere, no matter urban or rural. Gas Malaysia only covers industrial, commercial and elite residential areas such as Putrajaya.
The use of natural gas piping system is not very popular among Malaysians, they prefer to use gas cylinders or stoves that use electricity. For industrial areas, the use of gas cylinders is not very suitable because it uses a large amount of natural gas. There are also shopping malls that use Gas Malaysia services to facilitate their tenants.

Gas Malaysia uses underground pipes to deliver from suppliers to their end customers. Apart from Gas Malaysia, Petronas also has their own underground pipes but they are not used by the public. The Petronas pipeline is from the processing center to the collection center only, while the Gas Malaysia pipeline is for their end users. Petronas is one of Gas Malaysia suppliers.
